New York City Comptroller Brad Lander and New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli have criticized eBay for removing pro-union and workers’ rights language from their human rights policy. The acquisition of TCGPlayer by eBay last year led to complaints from workers about low wages, poor accommodations, and lack of representation. The TCGunion-CWA filed a union petition in January and won their election in March, but has faced challenges in bargaining with eBay management. The comptrollers have urged eBay to restore the language in their policy and to meet with the TCGunion-CWA at the bargaining table with respect. eBay was forced to recognize its workers’ union after the National Labor Relations Board rejected the company’s attempts to overturn an official vote. The New York State and New York City pension funds hold a collective 2.5 million shares in eBay, valued at $111 million, and provide retirement security for over one million people. The TCGunion-CWA’s bargaining committee has submitted 25 meeting dates with management, but eBay has only accepted one of those dates, and the union has reportedly only met with management twice since winning its election in March.
