Disney Lorcana’s second set, Rise of the Floodborn, experienced a disrupted digital launch due to a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack. Publisher Ravensburger attributed the attack to a targeted attempt to disrupt the sale of the set directly to players. The attack left players unable to purchase cards and stuck in queues for several hours. Ravensburger has announced plans to address the issue and ensure future web launches are successful. The company will be reallocating item quantities to other channels in the short term and taking steps to define a clear roadmap for future website launches in the medium and long term. The attack was attributed to extremely determined bots by the platform and queue provider hired by Ravensburger. The investigation into the attack continues, and it is unclear whether the attack is linked to the theft and public leaking of cards from Lorcana’s unpublished third set. The failed digital launch has left fans frustrated, and Ravensburger has promised a second printing of The First Chapter. Queue-fair has stated that lessons have been learned and they will ensure that their system is deployed in a manner that protects clients’ webservers from DDoS attacks in the future.
