Three rare Trophy Pikachu cards from the early days of the Pokémon Trading Card Game recently sold at auction for a record-breaking $794,220. These cards were originally awarded to the top three finishers at one of the first national tournaments for the Pokémon TCG in Japan in 1997 and 1998. The cards were graded near-mint or mint 8 by Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA) and were sold just before the holidays. The bronze Trophy Pikachu is considered the most sought-after due to its unique artwork. A similar trio of Trophy Pikachus sold for $325,000 in May 2022, but that set only included one PSA 8 card.
In a separate auction, three rare and valuable promotional trainer cards from the 2000 Pokémon Japanese Promo World Challenge Secret Super Battle Best in Japan Decisive Battle sold for $457,500. These cards feature a photograph of the actual players surrounded by other Pokémon in the card art and are the first of their kind in PSA’s grading census. The Pokémon TCG has seen a surge in popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic, with rare cards fetching six-digit figures. The demand for these rare and valuable Pokémon cards continues to grow.
