Wizards of the Coast employees have revealed the ‘Heroes of the Realms’ MTG cards for this year, which were shared on Twitter on December 18 and 19. These unique cards are exclusively gifted to WotC staff and come with unusual abilities that are sure to impact any Commander game. The Heroes of the Realm series is designed to recognize the efforts of internal Wizards of the Coast staff and was first introduced in 2016 by current Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks. While not legal in most MTG formats, the Commander Rules Committee allows players to use a Heroes of the Realm card if their name is printed on the card.
Game designer Carmen Klomparens received the ‘Heroes of Kamigawa’ card, which is a planeswalker designed for staff who worked on the MTG set, Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty. Jontelle Leyson-Smith, director of diversity, equity, and inclusion at Wizards of the Coast, also received a Heroes of the Realm card for supporting philanthropic work at Wizards in 2022.
The article also mentions that the release of this year’s cards comes at a difficult time for the trading card game publisher, as Hasbro announced layoffs for 1,100 employees on December 11. For more information on the latest MTG cards and digital play, readers are directed to the MTG release schedule and MTG Arena decks and codes.
