Magic: The Gathering’s head designer, Mark Rosewater, has announced that MTG Battles have been approved for future use indefinitely. This new card type was introduced in 2023, making it the first new card type since 2007. Battles are permanents with Defense Counters that can be targeted by attacks, similar to planeswalkers. Currently, the only type of Battle is Siege, which transforms into something beneficial when enough damage is dealt to it. Rosewater has stated that the Magic community has responded positively to Battles, and they have been approved for future use. While Battles did not appear in the MTG Lord of the Rings set last year, Rosewater has confirmed that they will return in the future, although the specifics are unknown.
