Magic: The Gathering (MTG) is introducing a new booster pack called the Play Booster, which aims to combine the best features of both set boosters and draft boosters. The Play Booster will be released with the set Murders at Karlov Manor in February 2024. It will be a single booster pack that can be used in limited formats and also opened by casual players. The Play Booster will contain 15 cards, including guaranteed commons, uncommons, a rare or mythic rare, a basic land, non-foil and foil wildcards, and various other cards such as ad inserts or tokens.
Compared to Set Boosters, the Play Boosters will have two more playable cards but will lose the guaranteed art card and wildcard slot. Compared to draft boosters, the Play Boosters will have one less playable card but will gain both a non-foil and foil wildcard slot. Players may also pull a card from “The List,” which can be used in limited formats.
The Play Booster retains the possibility of pulling anywhere between one and four rares from each pack. The design teams have accounted for this change by including more tools to deal with powerful creatures and raising the quality of commons in all sets.
The introduction of the Play Booster comes after Wizards of the Coast discovered that set boosters were overshadowing draft boosters, leading to draft boosters sitting on shelves. The Play Booster aims to combine the play experience of a draft booster with the fun opening experience of a set booster.
