Magic: The Gathering is set to release Lost Caverns of Ixalan, a new expansion that will feature a tie-in with the Jurassic World franchise. The expansion will include a special insert called the Jurassic World Collection, consisting of 26 cards that can appear in Set Boosters and Collector Boosters. Set Boosters will have a 1 in 12 chance of pulling a card depicting characters and scenes from all of the films in the Jurassic World franchise, while Collector Boosters guarantee at least one inclusion. These cards will only be legal in Eternal formats – Legacy, Vintage, and Commander.
The Jurassic World Collection will feature mechanically unique designs created specifically for the expansion, with all of them being rare cards. The cards will draw from throughout Jurassic World’s history, although the spoilers released so far have focused mainly on the original Jurassic Park film. Notable cards include alternate art reprints of Jeff Goldblum’s character Dr. Ian Malcolm and the Tyrannosaurus Rex. The expansion will also include basic lands that flip to show life before and after the dinosaurs escaped.
In addition to the Jurassic World tie-in, Lost Caverns of Ixalan will feature borderless treatments, showcase variants, and cards inspired by Central American civilizations. The Oltec gods will be depicted on 16 cards with a special borderless treatment inspired by Mesoamerican art. The expansion aims to represent Latin American culture through its depictions of gods, ancestor worship, food, dress, and more.
Lost Caverns of Ixalan is set to launch on November 17th and will be one of the last major sets to use Magic: The Gathering’s two-booster pack split. The company recently announced a merging of set and draft boosters in a single, unified Play Booster.
