Heritage Auctions has announced an upcoming auction of all 295 cards from the original MTG Alpha set, which was first released in 1993. The set includes some of the most expensive cards in the game’s history, including the infamous Black Lotus. Each card will be sold individually, and bidding begins on March 14, with a live auction scheduled for 6pm CT.

The historic value and scarcity of the Alpha cards contribute to their high prices. Only a limited number of rare, uncommon, and common cards were produced, making it difficult to find rare Alpha cards in top-quality condition. The auction will feature some of the most expensive Magic cards of all time, including a BGS grade 9 Black Lotus and a grade 9.5 Time Walk.

Many of the cards are signed by their original illustrators, further increasing their value. In the past, mint Alpha Magic cards have sold for anywhere between $10,000 and $500,000. Rapper Post Malone owns the most expensive Black Lotus in the world, which he claims to have paid $800,000 for.

While the Alpha set is expected to attract big bids, the biggest sale of all time was for a card from a new set, with Post Malone paying $2 million for a one-of-a-kind copy of The One Ring from the Lord of the Rings Universes Beyond set. The auction listings can be found on the Heritage Auctions website.
