Magic: The Gathering (MTG) is a popular trading card game that has evolved over the years, leading to different types of booster packs. Currently, there are four types of booster packs available: Set Boosters, Draft Boosters, Jumpstart Boosters, and Collector Boosters. This variety can be confusing for new and returning players. To address this issue, MTG Head Designer Mark Rosewater has announced changes to Set and Draft Boosters. These two types will be replaced by a new type called “Play Boosters” starting in 2024.
Play Boosters aim to combine the features of Set and Draft Boosters. They will contain multiple foils, special cards, and reprints, providing the excitement of opening unique cards. Additionally, Play Boosters can be used for draft or other limited format games. The contents of a Play Booster include at least 6 Common cards, a Common or a card from “The List,” three Uncommon cards, one Rare or Mythic Rare card, a basic or common land (with a chance of being foil), non-foil and foil “wild cards,” and a non-playable card such as a token or art card.
The first set to feature Play Boosters will be Murders At Karlov Manor, launching in February 2024. Set Boosters and Draft Boosters will still be released for The Lost Caverns of Ixalan and Ravnica Remastered sets. These changes aim to reduce confusion for players and retailers and provide a more streamlined booster pack experience. Whether players are collectors or competitive players, they can look forward to the arrival of Play Boosters in 2024.
