A rare 1998 Pokémon card, Pikachu Illustrator, has recently sold for $2 million in a private sale on auction site Goldin. The card was in mint PSA 9 condition. Goldin is now auctioning off an identical copy of the card with the same PSA grading. This card is considered to be the most expensive rare Pokémon card of all time, with only 39 copies ever made. The card was created as a prize for a Japanese illustration contest and was given out to the children whose drawings won the contest. Due to the limited number of quality copies in circulation, promo cards like Pikachu Illustrator are highly sought after and can easily outstrip fan favorites like the first edition Charizard Pokémon card, despite not being playable cards. The Pikachu Illustrator card was illustrated by artist Atsuko Nishida, who is credited with designing some of the most famous Pokémon. Goldin is currently auctioning a second PSA 9 Pikachu Illustrator card, with bids reaching $240,000 at the time of writing. This sale follows Logan Paul’s purchase of a PSA 10 quality copy of the card for $5.275 million in 2021.
