Richard Garfield, the creator of the card game Netrunner, expressed his delight at the game’s community keeping it alive. Originally designed as a trading card game, Netrunner was released in 1996 but was cancelled just four years later due to lack of commercial success. Over a decade later, the game was relaunched as Android: Netrunner, which ran for six years before being cancelled in 2018. Following its cancellation, a community project called Project NISEI, now known as Null Signal Games, took over to keep the game alive by releasing original cards, expansions, and starter sets, as well as running tournaments and other organized play events.

Garfield praised the passion of fans for making it “satisfying” to revisit his older games and revealed that he had considered designing new cards for the latest version of Netrunner. He expressed his satisfaction in designing within a framework where there is a built-in audience, as opposed to creating a new game, which is a lot of work and uncertain in terms of community reception. Garfield also expressed his love for seeing the community take ownership of games and modify them to create what they are looking for in games.
