Wizards of the Coast has announced significant changes to the ban system in Magic: The Gathering (MTG) to save the Standard format. The new system includes one major ban event per year, with mini-ban windows three weeks after each set’s release. The recent major ban event resulted in the unbanning of two MTG cards, which did not affect MTG Arena formats. The banlist for the Standard format on MTG Arena currently includes four banned cards, with the latest bans implemented to shake up and revitalize the format. The banlist for the Historic format on MTG Arena is longer and includes powerful cards that have created problematic combos and play patterns. Wizards has also utilized Alchemy’s rebalancing feature to alter the cost, stats, and abilities of certain cards. The Historic All Access, Basically No Bans event is currently ongoing, featuring only three banned cards. This event has been popular and may eventually evolve into its own format. The banlist for the Explorer format on MTG Arena is separate from the main format and shares similarities with the Pioneer banlist. The Brawl format has only one banned card at the moment. It is important to note that the regular Standard banlist does not apply to Brawl.
