Magic: The Gathering is introducing a new product called the Play Booster, which combines the features of draft boosters and set boosters. However, the Play Booster will be sold at the same price as set boosters, which has raised concerns among players. The Play Booster is set to be released in February 2024 alongside the Murders at Karlov Manor set.

The Play Booster aims to address market confusion caused by the different booster options available. While casual players may not be affected by the price increase, the Magic: The Gathering community is being asked to pay more for an experience that may not change or could potentially harm limited play.

According to Mark Rosewater, the head designer of Magic: The Gathering, the cost of limited events and prerelease packs will increase slightly due to the introduction of Play Boosters. However, he claims that the expected value of the boosters will also increase because of the additional opportunities to pull rare and mythic rare cards.

Wizards of the Coast, the company behind Magic: The Gathering, believes that the value players will receive from the Play Boosters justifies the price increase. They argue that many players already preferred set boosters over draft boosters, so the change may not be noticeable to them.

However, some players are concerned that the price increase will make it more difficult for them to participate in the game. With the current economic climate, including the COVID-19 pandemic and cost of living crises, players worry that any increase in cost will push them out of the game.

While the Play Booster streamlines the product lineup and benefits casual players, it may come at the expense of the ability to actually play the game. This has raised questions about whether Magic: The Gathering is prioritizing being a game or a collectibles factory.
