Magic: The Gathering (MTG) has announced new details about its upcoming set, Lost Caverns of Ixalan. This set marks MTG’s return to the Ixalan plane, which is inspired by Central and South American cultures. The original block of Ixalan and Rivals of Ixalan introduced players to a world of pirates, conquistadors, merfolk, and dinosaur-centric societies. Lost Caverns of Ixalan will continue to explore these themes, with each color representing a different faction or group on the plane.
The set will introduce three new mechanics: Craft, Descend, and Discover. Craft will be found on double-faced cards and allows players to transform mundane artifacts or equipment into more powerful versions by paying a material cost. Descend is a mechanic that triggers additional abilities when a permanent card enters the graveyard during a player’s turn. Discover allows players to interact with the top cards of their library by paying a mana cost and exiling cards until they find a spell with a specific mana value.
In addition to these new mechanics, the set will also feature the return of Explore, which has received an upgrade, and Finality Counters, which introduce new terminology for an existing mechanic.
Lost Caverns of Ixalan will be released worldwide on November 17th, with a prerelease event weekend starting on November 10th. MTG Arena players will have access to the set starting on November 14th.
