Marisa Freese, a paper artist from Florida, has created a life-size, painted paper sculpture of the legendary Magic: The Gathering card, Black Lotus, as a gift for her boyfriend. The project took a day to complete and cost just over $70 in materials. The stem of the lotus is fixed into a glass case, while the petals and central pod are made from carefully crafted paper. Freese used various techniques of paper quilling, as well as drilling and hot glue, to create the intricate shapes of the petals. This is not the first Magic-inspired craft project that Freese has undertaken; she has previously made mana symbols and ornaments for her boyfriend. Freese herself enjoys collecting land cards for their beautiful art and also has a fondness for life gain cards. Paper quilling is a skill that can be learned and improved over time. In other Magic: The Gathering news, fans recently played the game at a death metal concert, and there are exciting reprints to look forward to in the forthcoming set.
