The upcoming MTG Fallout set will feature the return of the fortifications mechanic, which has not been seen since it was first introduced in Future Sight in 2007. The C.A.M.P card, which depicts the base-building mechanics from Fallout 76, is an artifact that can be attached to a land and places a +1/+1 counter on a creature each time it is tapped for mana. Additionally, if it produces mana of the same color as the creature, a junk token is also obtained. Fortifications were introduced in Future Sight as an experimental inclusion, with only one card, Darksteel Garrison, printed with the mechanic. Magic’s head designer, Mark Rosewater, has previously stated that fortifications are unlikely to return due to design space limitations. The appearance of the fortifications keyword in a one-off card on a Commander product, rather than in a Standard set, may be due to these limitations. MTG Universes Beyond products, such as the Fallout set, are proving to be a great place to introduce unusual cards, such as the New Vegas-themed Fallout card.
