The head designer of Magic: The Gathering, Mark Rosewater, revealed in a recent article that the game almost had a card that was a Magic version of the Mystery Machine from Scooby Doo. The card, originally named ‘Mystery Machine’, was intended to be a Vehicle card with disguise but ended up as a living metal detector called Magnetic Snuffler. The set also includes a direct reference to the Scooby-Doo gang in Meddling Youths and a card called Sophia, Dogged Detective, featuring a Great Dane detective and mechanics referencing Scooby snacks. Rosewater explained that the design team normally makes a list of pop culture references for top-down sets, which may explain the inclusion of these references. The Mystery Machine was ultimately scrapped because it was not recognizable enough and did not make sense in the Ravnica setting. The card that was made instead, Magnetic Snuffler, is focused on equipment and artifacts and is designed to synergize with the MTG Clue murder weapons.
