The Timeless format on MTG Arena has been evolving over the past month, with black decks dominating a recent tournament. Despite the potential for combo decks to dominate, black decks have proven to be the most successful. However, only one of the six black decks in the tournament utilized Necropotence, as cutting cards like Necropotence allows players to maximize Lurrus of the Dream-Den as a Companion. The tournament showcased the power of Lurrus, even in a format with strong card options. Two strategies, Rakdos Breach and Dimir Control, had breakout performances in the tournament. Rakdos Breach decks are combo-oriented, using Underworld Breach as a value engine and combo piece. Dimir Control plays a long game with few win conditions, relying on counter magic and removal. Lurrus excels in both decks, providing a huge level of inevitability and protection. To fight against these decks, it is recommended to interact with the opponent’s graveyard, such as using cards like Ashiok, Dream Render or Leyline of the Void. Overall, the tournament highlighted the power of Lurrus and the strength of these two archetypes in the Timeless format.
