DnD historian Ben Riggs has declared that the Golden Age of TTRPGs is over due to a fracturing of the community following the OGL debacle. Riggs argues that the popularity of Dungeons and Dragons is declining and that the splintering of the fanbase could be disastrous for the hobby. He believes that the rise of new RPG systems after proposed changes to the OGL is a sign that the industry has peaked. Riggs predicts that the diversification of systems will cause RPGs to grow less diverse and that the release of a 6th edition of DnD may not be as popular as 5e. However, his argument has been met with criticism from other prominent voices in the tabletop community, who disagree with his views. Riggs’ argument is based on historical precedent, but TTRPG creators do not seem to be concerned by his predictions. Matt Colville, who was mentioned in the thread, dismissed Riggs’ argument and suggested that the Golden Age was only for investors and DnD’s owners.
