Mariluz Garcia won the first Modern MTG tournament after the bans that were supposed to curb the dominance of the Rakdos Scam deck. Despite the ban of the card Fury, another key card, Grief, is still effective at disrupting an opponent’s game plan with targeted discard. However, the meta breakdown on Day 2 of the tournament showed that Rakdos Scam is not as dominant as it once was, with Garcia being the only Rakdos player present. The new problem mechanic for Modern is MTG Cascade, not Evoke, as evidenced by the number of players running other decks such as Temur Rhinos and Living End. Grief and Fury, both from Modern Horizons 2, were considered problematic due to their ability to be easily brought back from the graveyard. The ban of Fury led some players to try the Orzhov Scam deck, but it has not gained much traction. Overall, the dominance of Rakdos Scam has been curbed, and players are exploring other deck options.
